Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Proof of Concept

Client: Marketing Solutions Provider

Service Required: Onsite Supported Learning and Practice-Labs

Background

Our client is a large marketing solutions provider represented in a number of countries across the globe. Being an industry leader in their field the business is always looking for competitive advantages; this philosophy extends across the whole organisation including IT.

Keeping up with the latest technologies in the market place is a time consuming and resource intensive task. All while maintaining a high level of IT support to the business would put any IT department to the test.

Problem

Due to distributed nature of the IT department it is difficult to maintain skills development at the same pace. Also the high pressure environment in which the support teams operate it is difficult to release staff to attend traditional 5 day courses.

With the release of Microsoft Windows Server 2008 the requirement of a proof of concept was proposed to identify the benefits of the new operating system and ensure that it met the organisations technical requirements. The additional requirement was to ensure all server engineers given the relevant knowledge and practical skills needed to support the new operating system as needed.

Solution

On engagement with Practice-IT the client opted for our onsite supported learning solution which utilises our Practice-Labs which is an integral part in practical skills development. The customised learning session and content was specific to the needs and functions of the personnel attending. These sessions were carried out on customer site thus reducing the risk of key members of staff being away from the business for too long.

The learning process did not stop once the sessions had completed as the server engineers could access the Practice-Labs anytime afterwards. This flexibility gives the ability to learn and develop at their own pace. Follow up web session have been used to top up and explain components as they were discovered.

The client is now in a strong position to deploy this technology in their production operating environment as not only do the engineers have a sound knowledge of the new operating system but also confident of their ability in carrying out administrative tasks due to the hands on experience gained in the Practice-Labs.
